Western States Film Project

My name is Mark Griffith. I am working on a photo spread to be featured in a fall issue of Ultra Running Magazine, all shot on film.

I've been adventuring in the PNW for the past 22 years; trail running, mountaineering, backpacking etc. I have always carried a camera with me to capture the moments along the way. I got into ultra running about 6 years ago and I have volunteered at Western States the past 4 years.

In the digital era of instant gratification there has been a trend to return to older ways of making art; the return of vinyl records, the flip phone and film cameras. Things are a little less perfect, take a little bit longer and provide a slightly less than perfect representation of the world.

I want to shoot Western States all on FILM this year and I'd like to take your portrait on film before the race and after. I'll also be out along the course.

I'll be around all day on Friday in the Olympic Village, for bib pickup and the race briefing and at the finish line and the closing ceremony.
